Requested by a reader, this one is a pleasure to feature here, because it's one of the most criminally unknown releases from the past decade, and one of the best.American singer and composer TAYLOR MESPLÉ recorded and put out this "Victory Land" - his debut album - independently in 2002. But indie does not mean poor production or players. At least not in this case.Throughout this delicate piece of smooth WestCoast AOR with sophisticated Pop & Melodic Rock touches you will enjoy a terrific, first class sound production, and some of the most respected L.A. session man such as guitarist Tim 'the touch' Pierce or the prince of swing Abraham Laboriel Jr. behind the skins. All tracks are really good combining melodic accessibility with the all out blowing of 'heavy' instrumental chops from every player on each track. Style-wise, think Richard Page (Mr. Mister era), Jason Scheff, Richard Marx, King Of Hearts and alike, but there's much more variation on the album to put it in one single category. As example, opener and title track "Victory Land", would not be out of place on Eric Johnson's Ah... Via Musicom.Taylor Mesplé's "Victory Land" is a wonderful CD, composed and performed with passion, elegance and tons of finesse.Rare and Great.01 - Victory Land02 - Answer Your Own Question03 - Glory04 - Imagination05 - One Word06 - Just Begun07 - No Apology08 - Go Somewhere (Renata's Story)09 - Running10 - GraceTaylor Mesplé: Vocals, Keyboards, Vocoder, Guitar SoundscapesTim Pierce: Electric & Backwards Guitars, 12 String & Sustainiae GuitarDave Beegle: Nylon String Guitar, E-BowJoe Gamble: Additional Electric GuitarsMel Brown: BassMichael Olson: Fretless BassAbraham Laboriel Jr: DrumsLarry Thompson: Drums & Processed Drum OverdubsDarren Rahn: ProgrammingKeith Rosenhagen: Acoustic GuitarWinston Ford : Background Vocals & Featured Guest VocalJohn David Webster, Rebecca Mesplé & Shauna Chanda: Background VocalsTAYLOR MESPLE - Victory Land.
THE BRAVE was one of the best Melodic Hard Rock bands appeared in the L.A. scene during the late '80s. Perhaps due their Christian origins they weren't more massive, and the band's debut, this superb "Battle Cries", arrived too late. The Brave recorded ten tracks of pure golden Melodic Hard Rock with Hair Metal and AOR touches, plenty of big hooks, terrific harmonies and memorable choruses mixed by guru Neil Kernon and produced by the talented duo John & Dino Elefante with a crisp, slick sound. The record was released via the brothers own label Pakaderm / Word in 1992. You can't find a weak song here, all are killers in their own right. There's outstanding gems in "All Together Now" and "The Waiting", more edgy rockers on the melodic "Tears Of A Broken Heart" or " Little Love", sublime AORish midtempos like "Never Live Without Your Love" and "Running All My Life", and a perfect ballad in "Just A Man".This CD edition of the album includes two extra tracks as bonus (not present in the LP / cassette) and really worth the addition: a completely different, AOR versions of "All Together Now" and "Running All My Life" without drums, added keyboards / orchestrations and multi-part vocal harmonies galore.
Often compared with the awesome Dann Huff's Giant, I am posting "Battle Cries" because at this point, the first album by The Brave should be considered a Melodic Hard Rock classic. It's that good and consistent in all departments. You never get tired of listening "Battle Cries", and now, while precisely I am giving it a new spin, decided to share it here because it must be part of hardrockaorheaven.blogspot.com. Besides, The Brave is back and recording a new album (the first in two decades), to be released soon.A Must Have in your collection.01 - All Together Now02 - The Waiting03 - If That Ain't Love04 - Running All My Life05 - Tears Of A Broken Heart06 - Little Love07 - Never Live Without Your Love08 - Big World09 - Ride With The Rhythm10 - Just A Man11 - All Together Now (Studio Mix) [bonus track]12 - Running All My Life (Studio Mix) [bonus track]James Salters - lead and harmony vocalsFreddie Tierra - guitars, harmony vocalsStayce Roberts - guitars, harmony vocalsMalcolm Paris - bass, harmony vocalsRandy Roberts - drums, harmony vocalsJohn and Dino Elefante - keyboards, orchestrationsTHE BRAVE - Battle Cries [CD edition +2] HQ.
Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...As requested, here it is the penultimate MICHAEL STANLEY BAND album, and their most successful commercially. Although my favorite from the combo is the already posted Inside Moves due its mid-eighties AOR feel, this "You Can't Fight Fashion" from 1983 it's a very nice exponent from the first half of the '80s American Melodic Rock. The record scored two prosperous singles with the anthem "My Town" into the Top40 - a song with more than 100 recorded versions all over the world - and the highly melodic and a personal pick "Someone Like You" sung by talented Kevin Raleigh, reaching a very respectable #75 on the Billboard charts."You Can't Fight Fashion" is mostly straight forward radio rock oriented interspersed with pristine midtempos like the highlight "The Damage Is Done", another AOR gem from Raleigh that reminds Orion The Hunter and Franke & Knockouts. Stanley's strong rocker "Fire In The Hole" is a story song about a mining disaster, with lead guitars all over (courtesy of new guitarist Danny Powers), while "Hard Time" is rich on stabbing keyboards / synths typical from the early '80s.
Released nationally by EMI America and handled by high-profile producer Bob Clearmountain (Bryan Adams, David Bowie), "You Can't Fight Fashion" should have been MSB's deserved widespread success. But a dispute between Stanley and the label ended with EMI dropping the band after only six months of contract.Despite of being the most fruitful on sales album in the entire Michael Stanley Band history, "You Can't Fight Fashion" is quite hard to find on CD (and in good quality on the blogosphere), only reissued some years ago with a couple of live bonus tracks.A fine, catchy slice of American Melodic Rock ripped at maximum quality.01 - Hard Time02 - Just Give Me Tonight03 - Someone Like You04 - Highlife05 - My Town06 - The Damage Is Done07 - Fire In The Hole08 - How Can You Call This Love09 - Just How Good10 - My Town (Live) [bonus track]11 - Someone Like You (Live) [bonus track]Michael Stanley: vocals, guitarKevin Raleigh: vocals, synths, organDanny Powers: lead guitar, vocalsBob Pelander: piano, synths, vocalsMichael Gismondi: bassTommy Dobeck: drums, percussionRick Bell: saxJimmy Maelen: percussionBob Clearmountain: arranger, mixing, producer, backing vocalsMSB You Can't Fight Fashion HQ.
With a new album to be released this month, Canadians SAGA are one of the more long-lasting bands still active, with almost forty years in the business and the same amount of records to their credit. And better than that, Saga never has released a bad album.Saga's foundation always has been progressive rock yet with a distinctive, melodic touch. They always cleverly slightly tweaked their sound at different stages of their career to fit the times, without selling out the identity of the band. During the '80s Saga infused to their polished sound a strong Melodic Rock feel complete with swirling keyboard lines and catchy choruses. For their seventh studio album, Saga signed with Atlantic Records with the aim to finally conquer the US market."Wildest Dreams" is the more commercial Saga album ever, with a huge, bombastic, big budget glossy production handled by guru Keith Olsen. With stylings reminiscent of Mr. Mister and a mature Starship, but also the typical Canadian sound of the era (Frozen Ghost, Glass Tiger Honeymoon Suite) the album is plenty of great poppy AOR tunes. All songs are good with title track amongst my favorites including the elegant "Chase The Wind", "Don't Put Out The Fire", "Angel" and the breezy "Only Time Will Tell".Despite its quality and the many potential singles "Wildest Dreams" went quite unnoticed in the US, but the album sold really well in Saga's more successful markets like Europe and their native Canada. The CD become a rarity for many years as Atlantic refused to give the rights to the band for a reissue.
This is a rip from the USA edition (the hardest to find) which sounds million times better than the European press by BMG/Bonaire. I don't know why, but I have tested many copies of the latter and they weren't bright as this Made in USA by WEA Manufacturing Inc.I added as bonus "Perfect Stranger", the song recorded by the band around the same time for the motion picture 'Johnny Be Good', a track never appeared into any Saga album (and a quite rare soundtrack).Enjoy Saga's "Wildest Dreams" - one of the first albums recorded DDD - a true product from the second half of '80s.01 - Don't Put Out The Fire02 - Only Time Will Tell03 - Wildest Dreams04 - Chase The Wind05 - We've Been Here Before06 - The Way Of The World07 - Angel08 - Don't Look Down09 - Perfect Stranger (Johnny Be Good OST)Michael Sadler - vocals, keyboardsJim Crichton - bass, keyboards & synthaxeIan Crichton - guitar, shadow midi guitar systems & synthaxeCurt Cress - drums, percussionSAGA Wildest Dreams (1987) USA edition.
Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...American songwriter / singer / guitarist Michael Stanley recorded two solo albums in the first half of the seventies with collaboration from the likes of Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren and David Sanborn, but he wanted a real, stable band and founded the MICHAEL STANLEY BAND in 1974.For over a decade, MSB rocked the arenas all over the US MidWest sharing stages with Foreigner, The Eagles or REO Speedwagon, and gained a strong loyal following in USA & Canada. The band's early '80s albums were the more popular with three Top40 singles and a video heavily played on the young MTV. But the one most praised by AOR fanatics is this final record as Michael Stanley Band (he continued recording as solo artist) entitled "Inside Moves".The album merges mid-eighties AOR sounds with radio friendly melodic rock, plenty of hooks and lots of keyboards played by the talented Kevin Raleigh who also share lead vocals with Stanley. The album was originally released only on vinyl featuring 9 tracks, later issued for the first time on CD during the nineties.
This 2003 reissue is the first (and only) remastered version of "Inside Moves" including 5 bonuses. My favorite is "Hard Die The Heroes" only released as a single, and it was featured in the professional American football team Cleveland Browns video 'Masters Of The Gridiron'. It's that kind of anthem so '80s.MSB should have been huge commercially, but EMI Records never properly supported the band nationwide.A shame, because they were really good.
